What is Germination?

Germinating cannabis seeds is the first step to growing a healthy, vibrant marijuana plant.
By mimicking ideal conditions for germination, cannabis seeds will sprout and begin growing into mature seedlings ready for transplanting.
Following a few simple steps helps ensure robust germination rates for your cannabis crop.
How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds?
Germinating seeds requires just water, heat, and darkness. While commercial growers use special germination trays, you can successfully germinate seeds at home using basic materials. Here’s a simple process:
Gather your cannabis seeds along with paper towels or cotton pads, clean water, sealable bags, and an incubator heat source (heating pad, hot water bath, etc.).
Gently soak the seeds in distilled water for 6-24 hours before transferring to the paper towel. Position the seeds an inch apart between damp paper towels.
Roll or fold up the paper towels and place them inside the sealed bag.
Move the bag to your incubation source set at 70-80°F. Keep the seeds warm and moist by checking the paper towels and spraying with water if needed.
Within 2-7 days, taproots should emerge from the most viable seeds. Once the root tip appears, plant the sprouted seeds in starter plugs or soil.
To Germinate Seeds:
- Soak seeds in water for 6-24 hours
- Transfer the seeds to the damp paper towel and seal them in a bag
- Incubate at 70-80°F for 2-7 days
- Check moisture and plant sprouted seeds root-down
Following this simple process, you can expect sprout rates of 80% or higher within a week.
Monitor for signs of fungus or decay and discard any non-viable seeds that fail to germinate. With care, germinated seeds will flourish into healthy cannabis seedlings ready for your growth.
