What is Cymene?
Cymene is an aromatic organic compound that belongs to the class of hydrocarbons called terpenes. It is found naturally in various plants, including some cannabis cultivars.
Cymene has a fresh, citrusy aroma reminiscent of orange peels. It is present at varying levels in certain cannabis strains, usually those with limonene or other citrus-like flavors.
Along with providing aroma, cymene offers anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. It binds to CB receptors and could play a role in the entourage effect of marijuana.
As a terpene, cymene works synergistically with cannabinoids like THC and CBD to influence the overall effects. Strains high in cymene may provide uplifting, energetic experiences.
Cymene levels tend to be lower in cannabis compared to dominant terpenes like myrcene, limonene, or caryophyllene. But even small amounts make a difference to the strain’s smell and effects.
Some examples of cultivars potentially high in cymene include
- Super Lemon Haze (lemony, citrus aroma)
- Jack Herer (citrus pine scent)
- Chemdawg (fuel, piney flavor)
- Island Sweet Skunk (fruity, citrus taste).
Cymene content can vary widely depending on factors like genetics, growing conditions, curing methods, and storage. But in general, citrusy or pine-scented strains are more likely to contain measurable cymene levels.
