Pheno-hunting is the process of identifying and selecting desirable phenotypes of a cannabis strain.
Phenotypes refer to the observable physical characteristics of a plant, which are determined by genetics and environmental factors.
With cannabis breeding, pheno-hunting involves growing out a large number of seeds that originated from the same strain and choosing special phenotypes that express favorable traits.
What is Pheno-Hunting?
Pheno-hunting is the process of finding unique phenotypes within a strain of cannabis.
When a cannabis breeder initially develops a new strain, it exists as a population of seeds that are genetically very similar but not identical.
Each seed will grow into a plant that expresses slightly different physical characteristics – this variation in phenotypes is due to slight differences in the genes of each plant as well as environmental factors like light, nutrients etc.
Pheno-hunting involves growing out a large number of plants from a batch of seeds and selecting special phenotypes that exhibit desirable traits like high THC, good yield, disease resistance etc.
The chosen phenotypes can then be used for further breeding to stabilize the favorable traits.
