What is Pod?
The pod refers to the part of the cannabis plant that contains seeds. It is an oval-shaped capsule that forms after the flower is pollinated. The pod develops to protect the fertilized ovules that will become the cannabis seeds.
As the seeds mature inside the pod, it opens up and separates to release the seeds, allowing for harvesting. The color of the mature pod will change from green to brown or yellow. Once the pod fully opens and dries out, the seeds will drop out or can be manually removed.
Cannabis plants can be male or female. Only the female plants produce buds and seed pods. The male plants provide the pollen that fertilizes the females to create the seed pods.
Once pollinated, the female plant expends energy into seed production inside the pods rather than producing more buds.
Growers aiming to produce marijuana buds for consumption will try to prevent pollination of the female plants. Any male plants are removed to prevent pollination and seed pod production, allowing the female plants to focus energy on resinous bud production.
However, cultivating the seeds collected from the pods allows new cannabis plants to be grown. The seeds contain the full genetic code from both parent plants to create new varieties.
Growers looking to breed new strains will allow controlled pollination for seed pods and seed production.
