What is Pot?
Pot is a slang term for cannabis that emerged in the 1930s within the American jazz scene, where marijuana use was common. “Pot” became shorthand for referring to the dried cannabis buds that are smoked recreationally.
The word likely derives from the Spanish term “potiguaya,” referring to cannabis leaves smoked for intoxication effects.
Using the term pot allowed discreet discussion of cannabis as marijuana prohibition began in 1937.
Despite marijuana becoming more common, pot remained the predominant American slang term throughout the 20th century.
It refers specifically to cannabis flowers smoked or vaped for THC effects rather than oils, edibles, or other derivatives.
While pot and cannabis are often used interchangeably, some key differences include:
- Pot implies recreational use, while cannabis is a medical/scientific term
- Cannabis can mean legal medical/recreational products, while pot may mean illicit cannabis
- CBD-only products without psychoactivity are not referred to as pot
As cannabis gains acceptance globally, using the proper term provides clarity and reduces stigma. However, pot remains a widely used nickname in cannabis culture.
