What is Reciprocity?
Reciprocity refers to an agreement between two legal medical or recreational cannabis systems to honor each other’s access requirements.
Reciprocity allows people enrolled in out-of-state medical marijuana programs to shop at dispensaries in another state.
It lets visiting medical cannabis patients avoid the difficulty of obtaining a new recommendation from local doctors when traveling or living temporarily out of state.
Some adult-use states also allow reciprocity for recreational sales.
With a receipt from a dispensary at home, recreational users can buy cannabis where it’s legally sold instead of resorting to local black markets.
Reciprocity agreements are at the discretion of each state government and are not federally mandated.
Only some legal states currently offer full or limited reciprocity rights to medical or recreational consumers from other jurisdictions.
Reciprocity promotes broader consumer access and makes cannabis tourism simpler for non-residents.
